Shyann Penner was nominated by Jennifer Hutchingame at the HearingLife clinic in Red Deer to receive a brand new pair of hearing aids thanks to the Campaign for Better Hearing’s Give-back program. For every hearing test taken at one of the campaign sponsors’ clinics, $4.00 is donated towards the purchase of hearing aids for those who need them, but can’t afford them. Shyann is among the hundreds of award recipients and she is truly grateful.

“I feel this will greatly improve my quality of life,” Shyann explains. “I’ll be able to hear better in social crowds, and it will be nice to feel like I fit in.”

Hearing loss can be an isolating experience. Not being able to understand conversations can cause people to withdraw from social settings. In Shyann’s case, she also felt the impact of hearing loss throughout her school career.

“I am looking forward to hearing better in class as well,” says Shyann. “All I hear at the moment is the projector fans over most of what is being said.”

Shyann even experienced a situation where not being able to hear could be dangerous.

“I live on a farm. When I was younger, my father-in-law had bale fall on him. If it had just been me home, I would not have heard him. It worries me that something may happen again and I won’t be able to hear anyone call for help.”

When it comes to hearing loss, Shyann’s message to those who suspect they have it is simple:

“You need to get your hearing tested. There are resources that can help and being able to hear improves your quality of life.”
