Name: Yvonne Mrema

Location: Clinical Audiologist at HearingLife Canada, Okotoks, Alberta

“The Campaign for Better Hearing has enabled me to be a vehicle in sharing with my community, including my family and friends, the importance of getting their hearing checked as part of their regular medical check-up.”

During her high school days when she studied in Kenya, Yvonne would sing at local functions with her band. Now, Yvonne is singing a different tune at HearingLife Canada in Okotoks, Alberta where she has worked as a clinical audiologist since June 2009 to help people hear the world around them again.

“I love it when I fit children with hearing aids and parents tell me what a difference their lives at home have been,” says Yvonne. “There is peace and less noise at home since their child got fitted with hearing aids.  I also get satisfaction when I fit adults with hearing aids and they say to me, “this is easier than I thought.  Why didn’t I get hearing aids sooner?””

Yvonne loves to travel, watch movies and cook new dishes from various parts of the world, but when she’s not doing that, she’s spending time with her family. As a mother of two precious girls, Yvonne loves spending time doing what her little girls enjoy and putting a smile on their faces, and it was her younger brother’s issues with his ears as a child that inspired Yvonne to pursue a career in Audiology.

With her interest in the “ear” cultivated, Yvonne went on to receive her Bachelors of Science with Honours in Biochemistry from Dalhousie University and then obtained her Masters of Clinical Sciences in Audiology from the University of Western Ontario. All of her expertise helps with, not only her career as an Audiologist, but also her role in the Campaign for Better Hearing which awards hearing aids to those who need them but can’t afford them.

For every hearing test taken with the campaign’s sponsors, the campaign donates $4.00 towards the purchase of aids which are then awarded to those with hearing loss.

“The Campaign for Better Hearing has enabled me to be a vehicle in sharing with my community, including my family and friends, the importance of getting their hearing checked as part of their regular medical check-up,” says Yvonne.
