“I was working as a waitress, but I knew that I wanted to do more. Now, I get to help people interact with their families and friends.”

Karen McCallion began her career in the hearing health industry as a client service administrator at ListenUP! Canada in 2005. Seven months later, she pursued a career as a Hearing Instrument Specialist at Grant MacEwan College and graduated in 2008. Upon graduating, Karen spent three years working a ListenUP! Canada in Toronto, two years at ListenUP! Canada in Ottawa, then four years at Apex Hearing Systems, (now HearingLife Canada,) in Alberta before returning to ListenUP! Canada in Kemptville (near Ottawa.)

Now, she’s a Clinic Manager in Kemptville and lives out in the country with her husband and two-year-old son.

“When I’m not working, most activities revolve around my son,” says Karen. “We garden and play outdoors as much as possible.”

Interestingly, Karen was influenced to enter the world of Audiology by her aptitude and personality test results. Years later, she doesn’t regret her decision and her commitment to her job is evident. She won the “Hearing Professional of the Year” award in 2012 and the “Hearing Professional Merit” award in 2013.

“I was working as a waitress, but knew I wanted to do more. Some aptitude and personality tests revealed that Audiology would suit my personality. Now, I get to help people hear their surroundings and interact with their families and friends. I am very pleased with my career choice.”

Participating in the National Campaign for Better Hearing is an important role in Karen’s job. For every hearing test she conducts, the campaign sponsors donate $4.00 towards the purchase of aids for those who really need them through the campaign’s Give-Back program. Karen sees the campaign as an opportunity to raise hearing health awareness.

“The Campaign for Better Hearing gives me an opportunity to share the importance of hearing healthcare and getting a baseline hearing test with clients and loved ones,” says Karen. “Hearing healthcare is a major component in ones quality of life.”
